Trowels and Floats Frequently Asked Questions
What is the difference between a trowel and a float?
Although tiling trowels and floats look similar, they have very different applications. A tiling trowel will be used before you lay your tile to spread “thinset,” or the mortar that will hold the tile in place. Trowels are jagged or notched—this creates stripes in the mortar at the appropriate depth to hold the tiles in place once they are installed. A grout float is used after the tile is laid to spread grout, the mortar that goes in between tile spaces, to hold your tiles together. While trowels are typically made of metal, trowels are often made of rubber or similarly soft materials so they won’t scratch the surface of the tiles.
What kind of trowels and floats are there?
A few types of trowels and floats that you should be familiar with are margin trowels, pointing trowels, square and v-notched trowels, and margin grout floats.
- Margin trowels: Margin trowels are designed for patch work and cleaning other tools.
- Pointing trowels: Pointing trowels are designed for scraping, digging, or repairing work.
- Square notched trowels: Square notched trowels are typically used to dispense more mortar and leave more space for the mortar to compress.
- Jagged V-notch trowels: V-notch trowels are typically used for smaller tiles and for wall and ceiling applications.
- Margin grout floats: Compared to regular grout floats, margin grout floats are designed for grouting in small areas, such as corners.
What is the best trowel for tiling?
There are many different types of trowels available, from gardening trowels to squeegee trowels and more. You’ll want to make sure that you select a trowel that is specifically designed for tiling, like those in our selection at Floor & Decor. From there, you’ll have different sizes of trowels to choose from—the ultimate best trowel for your tile installation project will depend on whether you are tiling your floor, wall, or ceiling, as well as the size and weight of your tile.
How do I know what size trowel to use for tiling?
As a general rule of thumb, the bigger the tile you are installing, the bigger the trowel needs to be. Selecting the right size trowel is important for avoiding air pockets and helps ensure that your tile installs securely, avoiding slips and movement post-installation. U-notch trowels and square notch trowels are typically used for larger tiles, while V-notch trowels are typically used for underlayment, backerboard, and mosaics.
