Real People, Real Projects: Gretchen’s Full Home Renovation

By Floor & Decor

Gretchen is a longstanding associate at Floor & Decor with an eye for design. She’s been happy to call her suburb of Atlanta home for 18 years and recently undertook a major renovation where she completely transformed her home.

Gretchen harnessed her expertise in decorating to create unique bathrooms, upgrade her kitchen and laundry space, and install new hardwood floors. The result is a true showcase of her passion for craftsmanship, style, and function.

Engineered Hardwood

After nearly two decades, Gretchen and her family decided it was time to update their space. Gretchen says, "Before the renovation, this home was very traditional, had very dark reddish floors, and overall had a darker, cozier feel than it has now."

Gretchen explains, “The flooring we have now is actually an unfinished hardwood product. I loved the seven-inch planks, but I also wanted to be able to customize the color and get it to exactly the tone that I wanted. Using unfinished allowed me to do that."

Installation Patterns

One popular trend right now is using tile to create unique patterns. From herringbone to basketweave, there are countless tile patterns to choose from that can give your floors a fresh, modern look.

Gretchen says, "Floor pattern has been trending for a while, and I happen to love it. In the guest bathroom, I really wanted a classic pattern on the floor, so I chose a marble concentric hexagon pattern, something that's been around forever and ever, and then chose a really soft 3 x 12 tile for the shower to complement that."

Bathroom Mosaics

Mosaics offer a unique flair to a space while still being practical and functional. With such versatility in application along with their impact, incorporating mosaic tiles in bathrooms uplifts the aesthetic appeal and adds unique value.

With this in mind, Gretchen decided to incorporate a mosaic in her master bathroom. She says, "When you walk into the primary bathroom, the first thing you see is a very large waterjet marble mosaic on the shower wall. And we chose that to be a statement piece." As well as creating a bold focal point, a statement piece should reflect the unique personality and tastes of the owner.

Gretchen says, "We used Floor & Decor products throughout this project, and it was actually really a very easy process. We have such a broad selection really across all of our materials that we really had no trouble pulling this project together with Floor & Decor."
